Android is a Linux-based operating system designed primarily for touchscreen mobile devices such as smartphones and tablet computers. Initially developed by Android, Inc., whom Google financially backed and later purchased in 2005,  Android was unveiled in 2007 along with the founding of the Open Handset Alliance: a consortium of hardware, software, and telecommunication companies devoted to advancing open standards for mobile devices.  The first Android-powered phone - HTC Dream - was released in October 2008, powered with Android version 1.0 (Android Alpha).

So what is Android all about? While there are millions Android users out there, knowing and understanding Android is a must to make the overall experience even better. Here are six facts about your beloved Android that you should know.

An operating system design primarily for smart phones and tablets. Some have migrated to netbooks as well. Free operating system is many in the market today. One of the notable names is Ubuntu. As android is a Linux type operating system, virus is less compare to Window OS. There might be more coming with many hackers being boring at home and trying to get a name for themselves.

But as far as security concern, Android still is far safer than most operating systems out there. Even if its infected by virus, it can be easily reverted to original setting with simple touch without the needs of lengthy formatting times. 

As Android OS is cementing its place in the mobile market, one do wonder when will Android try to be the leader in the computer world as well.
